spot comments

I got my physical SPOT test papers back today from the Love House (yes, that's an actual building on campus, behind the Motorola building - you learn something new everyday)... And spent a good while reading them, they're REALLY FUNNY some of them; and some of them just deserve a plain old awww... I've put some of them up here - the one's that are not monosyllabic... Hahha... Also, Microecons was pretty cakewalky (touchwood) and Control was pretty smooth except for one question that slightly ass raped me. Everyone seems to have fudged that one up so meh... CHEM TOMORROW AND THEN IT'S FREEDOM...

What were the best things about the tutorials?
  • On the six-day Lionel-For-Life program, I turned my life around and went from a B- student to a A+++ student. In the process, I also lost 85 pounds. IT REALLY WORKS!! (Say what?!)
  • Lionel.
  • Lionel is great!
  • The tutor was prepared and showed enthusiasm for teaching the unit. This made attending the tutorials fun and not seem like a chore. I also have been motivated to work hard as the tutor seemed like a role model to me. (Aww...)
  • LIONEL RULES!! (With a ruler of course)
  • Extremely helpful in understanding the content of this unit! Explanations have been very clear and thorough. Thanks Lionel! (Aww No. 2)
  • Lionel's explanations were very clear and easy to understand. So far one of the best & informative tutor's I've had. (Aww No. 3)
  • Lionel was quality, really great help, thanks mate. (Aww No. 4)
  • Lionel Lam-inar. (And I thought my jokes were bad)
  • Lionel was able to answer all questions apart from the 10cm pipe 0.011m3/s flow rate u=1.4m/s question. (This student is taking a poke at me as this is apparently the only question I got wrong in the exam last year; it was True/False, and Marco announced this embarrassing fact to the entire class)
  • The tutor. (Aww No. 5)
  • Lionel has been the best tutor ever :). He is always so well prepared, approchable and enthusiastic. His explanations are always very clear and in-depth. He has also been very lenient. (Aww No. 6)
  • He is the best hydraulics tutor! (Aww No. 7)
  • His enthusiasm and hair. (My hair?! I don't do my hair.)
  • Lionel is a great tutor. He explains very well and has knowledge not only about the assignments but about course content. He also seems to get to know students individually and by name which makes him more approachable. (Aww No. 8)
  • Tells funny jokes. (SCORE!)
  • Enthusiasm.
What improvements could be done to the tutorials?
  • Should have greater understanding that althought he may think it's really easy, not everyone else does! (Snap...)
  • LIONEL SHOULD DO THEM ALL! (I don't mind the $$$)
  • Please write bigger! (Brings back memories of YK)
  • Slower working - more explanation.
  • Nothing. Everything is perfect. (Aww No. 9)
  • More time for tutorials.
  • We should get a tutor like him in every tutorial. (Aww No. 10)
  • Jokes made funnier. (SCORE NULLED :()
Pretty good eh!!! And I was expecting more people to comment on the fact that I talk way too fast for my own good... With my ego masturbation complete, I have to go watch Supernatural. And then study chem. My priorities are pretty messed up.

Will update with more substantial post soon!

calm before the storm

And it's the calm before the storm before the triple whammy that is Micro, Control and Chem one after another... Here's hoping they don't rape me as hard as I'm gonna attempt to rape them.

But there is just so much to look forward to after...
Steak at Aunt's House on Saturday after Chem.
Swimming with Yuhan on Sunday.
Gym with Des and/or beach with Nut on Monday.
Antonio's as per Vinci's request on Tuesday.
Hippo Creek on Friday.

And somewhere in between I have to meet up with Liong for old time's sake, Elsie to see her new baby, and my students for a long overdue picnic.

And then it's:
Kuching on Sunday.
Shanghai on Wednesday.
Nanjing on Saturday.
Vac Work starts Sunday, with Buzz keeping company.

Pure unadulterated awesomeness.

leeches

I LOVE it how at the end of each semester, people I don't talk to at all and that I hardly even know start calling me, or contacting me over Facebook to ask for help in teaching them entire semesters' worth of maths, etc... Not trying to be judgemental here, but users really piss me off. It's less a matter of me not wanting to help; more a matter of me not thinking people like this deserve help at all. So yea, I could help sure; but I'm not really keen on helping people whose name I only hear of once during the entire semester during study break. In short, if the only time you contact me is to get help, sorry - no can do.

You know who you are.

argentum frames

I realise it's been too long since I've updated; but I've got good reason. Since returning from Sydney (which by the way was awesome, photos are on Facebook), the semester has turned on its engines like I've never seen before; I'd even go so far as to say that the second half of this semester has been the WORST SIX WEEKS OF MY LIFE - if not for some interesting events; after all, every cloud does have its silver lining.

So what have I been bogged down by exactly, these six weeks? Well, for starters, the second half of semester meant 2 chem labs every single week till the end of semester... That's 6 hours worth of chemistry labs a week; and a full lab report for each lab... With a one week deadline - I managed to finish 11 lab reports in 6 weeks. That's more lab reports than I did in the entire 2nd year. AND... This is not accounting for the fact that I had bloody programming assignments EVERY SINGLE WEEK proudly presented by the shittiest unit known to man a.k.a. GENG2140. Yes, I'm looking at you. Friggin' hell. WORST UNIT EVER. And strategically placed between all these labs and assignments was Multicultural Week, the Chem-E Car Competition (which we came 3rd in!!!), a 20% Group Project for Control, various other small assignments for Chem and Control, fortnightly tests for Microecons, tutoring 10 hours a week, marking Hydraulics assignments... Did I mention that this was the worst semester ever? I'm so glad it's over. Except for the exams of course.

But now for the silver lining(s)... First up, I managed to find vac work! I'm doing a research internship at Hohai University, Nanjing for three months; and Buzz will be there too. Gonna be really awesome, I think; especially since I plan to go down the research line of work. Also, I feel really lucky I managed to score this job because the floundering economy means that quite a few of my coursemates still haven't managed to get jobs yet...

Next, I've been renewed for tutoring next year - MATH1010, MATH1020 and MATH2040 next semester, and MATH1010, MATH1020 and CIVL2130 the semester after (apparently Marco thought I did a good job :D)... IN CONNECTION WITH THIS, I managed to get my first ever SPOT survey done and I got really good results - really really happy about this... Someone commented that I was so happy about the SPOT results; more so than I have ever been about my academic results. Well, it's true - it's good to do well in the subjects you do, but it's another thing to be appreciated as a teacher. I can truly say that being a teacher these two years has been a gift: after the last Hydraulics tute when my students clapped; and after the last test, when a few students came up to me to thank me - man, these moments make all the work and time spent worthwhile :). On a more sombre note, I recently found out that one of my students, whom I taught MATH1010, MATH1020 and half of MATH2040 passed away because of complications due to colon cancer. I never really got to say goodbye and when I first heard it, it was like a slap to the face. He was an awesome student and a great guy, and I hope he rests in peace.

Anyway, I've got to get back to work if I want to do well this semester! Will be updating soon; having my last exam on the 7th; heading back to Malaysia on the 15th; and heading to China on the 18th.

P.S. Everyone should watch Fringe. It is awesome!

toga up

Went to Amy's 21st last night and it was pretty damn awesome! The theme was 'Letter A', i.e. dress up in anything beginning with the letter A; and after having missed Timmys 'Angel In White' party which I had intended in hijacking by rocking up in a toga, I decided to seize this opportunity to Roman suit up (something I had never done before and really wanted to). Went to Spotlight to buy 4.5m of white cloth, bought some copper wire and cut some leaves from my garden to make myself an olive wreath, and used some cardboard and Al foil to make a sword... :D

Yea, there were some VERY awesome costumes there: Amy herself dressed up as Audrey Hepburn (and really looked like her wtf... Just compare with the 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' poster), there were others dressed as Albert Einstein, an Ant, an Army Man, an Australian Ranger, an Al Qaeda Member, Aloha (i.e. Hawaiian, kinda pushing it but yea), Amidala, an Alien, etc... :D... Yea, you may be wondering, Toga doesn't start with the letter A and you would be right. It doesn't, but Ancient Roman/Augustus Caesar and Aurelius do. ;) I came to two conclusions that night.
  • I probably had the most fail 21st Birthday Celebration in the entire history of mankind as it was spent in Business School, studying. However, come to think of it, I was surrounded with awesome friends so maybe it wasn't that fail after all! :D
  • TOGAS ARE FRIGGIN AWESOME AND COMFORTABLE. I felt so sad when I had to take it off! It was so comfortable and surprisingly, warm... I wasn't cold at all the entire night :s... I think this is probably the reason why the Roman Empire was so awesome and managed to conquer so much land - coz of the togas :D. Next costume party, I'm togaing up again :D...
Pictures:

'Aloha' - Desiree Chee

'Audrey Hepburn' - Amy Lee, Bday Girl (WTF LOOKS SO MUCH ALIKE!!!)

'Albert Einstein', still has nothing on Arcady Dyskin LOL

'Army Man' - Alan Lee

'Alien', looks like Boo from Monsters Inc.

Andrew (dressed as an 'Apple': all red outfit plus a leaf taped to neck), Me and Chang Mei, I am so thankful I wore pants below my toga... LOL

Desiree Chee, Angela Cheng and Me

Rocking it, Roman Style!

John, Gabriel, Chang Mei ('Alvin and the Chipmunks' apparently...) and I

Desiree Chee, Angela Cheng and I again

Haha!

GF Required!

Anyway, Happy 21st Amy Lee, hope you had a good one - hope all your wishes come true :D:D... And uni work once again beckons... :( And I'm invigilating an exam for the first time tomorrow, how awesome! :D Haha...

professing my intense hate for unipark

Man, I am so pissed off at UWA Parking right now. For a university with 15035 undergraduates, 4485 postgraduates and only 3222 staff (according to 2008 data, YES I LOOKED IT UP :@), you would think that it would get it's priorities right! BUT NO. Instead of allocating its parking space in the ratio of roughly 6:1 in favour of students, THEY ALLOCATE IT 1:1 - MAJOR WTF... WHY MUST THEY DO THIS! DOES IT PLEASURE UNIPARK to watch students circle round and round and round and round and round the campus from the Eng Carpark to Eng Carpark 2 to Biz School, to Rec, to Sandpits, back to Eng, back to Eng Carpark 2, into Broadway, onto Myers St and so on WITHOUT FINDING A SINGLE DAMN PARKING HOLE :@:@:@::@:@:@:@:@@... THIS EXTENDS TO PAY PARKING AS WELL... THERE ISN'T ENOUGH OF IT!!! AND even on the off-chance that we manage to find pay-parking, by MURPHY'S LAW, it is either:
  • Located 500 miles away from where we're supposed to have our class
  • It is raining cats and dogs and elephants and there is no way you can leave your car as there is no shade around!
  • THE FRIGGIN TICKET MACHINE IS SPOILT SO YOU HAVE TO TREK UP AND DOWN TRYING TO FIND AN OPERATIONAL TICKET MACHINE THAT DOESN'T EAT YOUR MONEY OR MAKE WEIRD SELF-DESTRUCT NOISES WHEN YOU PRESS THE GREEN BUTTON! :@:@:@ AND SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO DO THIS IN THE RAIN like I did just now. :@ :(
SO YEA, UWA. Please consider building a multi-storey carpark! PERHAPS UNDERNEATH JAMES OVAL WOULD BE GOOD. :@ But why am I complaining, it's not like I'll be here long enough to see anything of THAT nature happen.

On other matters, I really want to see Julie and Julia for some reason - I know it's a chick flick, but hey, it's about food... And food is good, we live to eat! :D

medley

Too little time to update, and need to cook dinner now! Will update soon, perhaps within the week. As for now, here's a video I put up coz Andrew Zhang reckons it'll help me get a girlfriend (amongst OTHER ploys)... Some mistakes but it's coz I'm getting old and my fingers are getting arthritic (LOL nah, just excuses) -_- Try and guess the songs: there are 12!

SYDNEY SOON! 5-12 SEPTEMBER, CAN'T WAIT! :D
